Abstract

The CyberC3 Project will liaise with the existing IST European CyberCars Project (Cybernetic Technologies for the Car in the City) and apply advanced IT&C technologies in cars and transport system, on one hand, aiming to propose an innovative transportation for the city of tomorrow based on fully automated vehicles (Cybercars), which has advantages of high flexibility, efficiency, safety; on the other hand, aiming to protect the environment and improve the quality of life for Asian sustainable development. The target groups are made up of five sub-groups: the IT&C researchers in automated vehicles; the decision-makers, such as governments, site managers, organizers of big activities; the end users; the system operators; the industries, such as car manufactories.

Objectives

  • to facilitate and improve contacts of Asian partners with the existing IST European Project CyberCars, through a series of workshops;

  • to encourage technology transfer, exchange of know-how, and stimulate collaboration among partners, through establishing related task forces with experts participating from both Europe and Asia, and developing new Cybercars vehicles;

  • to apply the advanced IT&C technologies in the cars and transportation systems in Asia, through a pilot application in the Shanghai Oriental Land;

  • to discovery the prospect of Cybercars in China and other Asian countries, through potential user analysis and site study, especially in the Beijing 2008 Olympic and the Shanghai 2010 World Expo, and to give guidelines for future land transport in Asia.

Activities

The CyberC3 Project is divided into six main activities:

  • ACTIVITY 1: Preparation I:
    Overall Scheme, including establishment of the official Project website, establishment of task forces, user needs analysis for the pilot application, and a technical workshop in Shanghai;

  • ACTIVITY 2: Preparation II:
    Technical Details, including test and evaluation of existing technologies, study tour in Europe, and a technical workshop in Paris;

  • ACTIVITY 3: Development of Vehicles
    including system design, electromechanical reconstruction of vehicle body, development of sub-systems (the sensor data acquisition system, the navigation system, the safety system for obstacle detection and collision avoidance, the control system, and the on-board HMI system), system integration, testing, refinement and demonstration, and production;

  • ACTIVITY 4: Implementation of a Pilot Application
    including site visit and user needs analysis in the Oriental Land, system design, construction of infrastructures (the navigation infrastructure, the stations, the electrical energy supply system, and the control office and the garage), development of the communication system and the central management system, system integration and testing, demonstration, and operation;

  • ACTIVITY 5: Potential Site Study
    including potential sites visit in China, user needs analysis, and solution study;

  • ACTIVITY 6: Dissemination of the Results
    including a workshop in Shanghai, reparation of the final report, and dissemination of the results.
